Fifth grade students at Black Mountain Elementary School (BME) had the delight of hosting local meteorologist, Jason Boyer of WLOS, this morning! The students filled the media center with huge smiles on their faces excited to see what Mr. Boyer had in store for them.
Mr. Boyer’s infectious enthusiasm permeated the media center as students were eager to ask their questions. Hands shot up one by one as he began his lesson. He brought amazing props and weather instruments to show the students. A few lucky students were able to help with some of his demonstrations.
This presentation was an amazing treat for the fifth grade students who have been studying weather concepts in their science classes.
“His presentation covers many key concepts of our fifth grade weather unit, which is the largest and trickiest of our science units,” said fifth grade teacher Caroline Clark. “He also shares his own story about how he became interested in meteorology as a fifth grader. Mr. Boyer is such a servant to give his time and expertise to our BME fifth graders,” she said.
Mr. Boyer finished his lesson with a Q&A session in which he discussed the scariest storm he’s ever experienced, and if cows really do fly in tornadoes. Then the students all gathered to take pictures with him.
BME and Buncombe County Schools would like to give a huge thank you to Mr. Boyer and the team at WLOS News 13 for making this event possible. It is truly amazing to see our students eager and excited to learn about weather and meteorology.
