Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books

This year we will be competing in the Elementary Battle of the Books.

What is Elementary Battle of the Books?

The purpose of this program is to encourage reading by all students. Students are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, expand their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base.  Even during the height of the competition, students and coaches should remember that the goal is to READ, not necessarily to win!

What do I have to do?

You have to be willing to read lots of great books.  Rising 4th grade and rising 5th grade students will need to read about 100 pages a week, including this summer.  You may also be asked to write and answer questions about your reading.  You have to be a great team player.

Here's how to sign up.

  • Forms will go home in May to all 3rd, & 4th grade students wanting to participate.

  • We send home a list of four summer reading books to those who have sign-up.

  • We meet once a week after-school for practice for an hour. (day to be determine)

There will be an assessment on the required summer reading list when you return to school in August.  This assessment will be used to determine who gets to be on the team.  Remember to read carefully.

This reading may also count in your Reading logs for homework.
